Today marks the 56th anniversary of the stepping down of the late Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, who announced on June 9, 1967, in a speech to the people, that he was stepping down from the presidency of the Republic, due to the defeat in the SixDay War in 1967.
Abdel Nasser stepped down on the evening of June 9, 1967, from the presidency of Egypt, bearing responsibility for the defeat in the June 5, 1967 war, but he retracted it the next day after millions of people went out to demonstrate in rejection of his resignation, and the journalist writer Muhammad Hassanein Heikal says in his testimony, which he mentioned in the book ” Talks in Politics, pp. 232234): “What happened on June 10 is full of astonishing surprises for the whole world. Masses of people came out as soon as Gamal Abdel Nasser finished delivering his resignation speech, demanding that he remain in his place and continue his work, and the masses in every Arab country came out insisting To continue fighting and under Nasser’s leadership.” Here is the full text of Nasser’s resignation.
Brothers.. we have become accustomed to being together in times of victory and in times of adversity.. in the good hours and in the bitter hours; To sit together, to speak with open hearts, and to be frank with the facts, believing that through this path alone we can always find our right direction, no matter how difficult the circumstances are, and no matter how dim the light.
We cannot hide from ourselves that we have faced a serious setback in recent days, but I am confident that we can all and in a short period of time overcome our difficult situation, even if we need a lot of patience, wisdom, moral courage, and dedicated work capacity.
But we brothers before that we need to look at what happened; In order to follow the developments and its path in reaching what it has reached.
We all know how the crisis in the Middle East began in the first half of last May. There was a plan from the enemy to invade Syria, and all the statements of its politicians and military leaders clearly said that, and the evidence was available for the existence of the plan.
The sources of our Syrian brothers were decisive in this, and our documented information confirmed it. Indeed, our friends in the Soviet Union notified the parliamentary delegation that was visiting Moscow at the beginning of last month; That there is a deliberate intention against Syria. And we have found it a duty that we must not accept that silently, and in addition to this being the duty of Arab brotherhood, it is also the duty of national security; The initiator of Syria will be praised in Egypt.
And our armed forces have moved to our borders with efficiency that the enemy witnessed before the friend, and many steps faltered as a result. Including the withdrawal of the international emergency forces, and then the return of our forces to the Sharm elSheikh sites that control the Straits of Tiran, which the Israeli enemy used as a relic of the tripartite aggression that took place against us in 1956, and the passage of the enemy flag in front of our forces was unbearable, in addition to other reasons related to With the best wishes of the Arab nation.
The accurate calculations of the enemy’s strength showed us that our armed forces, with their level of equipment and training; capable of repelling and deterring him, and we were aware that the possibility of armed conflict existed, and we accepted the risk.
We had many factors ahead of us. National, Arab and international, including a message from US President “Lyndon Johnson” delivered to our ambassador in Washington on May 26, asking us to exercise restraint, and not to be the first to fire, otherwise we will face dangerous results.
On the same night, the Soviet ambassador asked to meet me urgently at half past three in the afternoon, and informed me of an urgent request from the Soviet government that we not be the first to shoot.
On the morning of last Monday, the fifth of June, the enemy’s strike came. And if we say now that it came with more than we expected; We must say at the same time with certain confidence that it came with more than what it possesses, which made it clear from the first moment that there are other forces behind the enemy, who came to settle their scores with the Arab nationalist movement. And there were some eyecatching surprises:
The first of them: that the enemy we expected from the east and the north came from the west; Which makes it clear that there are facilities that exceed his ability, and exceed the calculated range of his strength, that have been given to him.
Second: The enemy covered all military and civilian airports in the United Arab Republic at one time, and this means that it was relying on a force other than its normal force, to protect its airspace from any reaction on our part. He was also leaving the rest of the Arab fronts for other aids that he was able to obtain.
Third: The evidence is clear of colonial collusion with him. He tries to benefit from the lesson of the previous open collusion in 1956, and this time he covers himself with meanness and malice. However, it is proven now that American and British aircraft carriers were near the enemy’s shores, helping his war effort. Also, British planes raided in broad daylight on some sites on the Syrian front and on the Egyptian front, in addition to a number of American planes carrying out reconnaissance operations over some of our sites.
The achieved result of this was that our ground forces, which were fighting the most violent and valiant battles in the open desert; found herself in the difficult situation; Because the air cover above it was not sufficient in the face of a decisive superiority in the hostile air forces, so that it could be said without any trace of emotion or exaggeration in that that the enemy was operating with an air force that exceeded three times its normal strength.
And this was also what the Jordanian Arab Army forces faced, which fought a valiant battle under the leadership of King Hussein, who I say for the truth and for the trust that he took an excellent stand, and I admit that my heart was bleeding while I was following the battles of his valiant Arab army in Jerusalem and other locations in the West Bank. On a night when the enemy and its conspiratorial forces mobilized no less than 400 aircraft to operate over the Jordanian front.
There have been wonderful and honorable efforts; The Algerian people and its great leader, Houari Boumediene, gave without reservations and without reckoning for the battle, and the people of Iraq and its loyal leader Abd alRahman Aref gave without reservations and without reckoning for the battle, and the Syrian army fought heroically, reinforced by the forces of the great Syrian people and under the leadership of their national government, and the peoples and governments of Sudan, Kuwait, Yemen, Lebanon and Tunisia took Morocco stands honorable, and all the peoples of the Arab nation, without exception, along the entire length of the Arab world, stood the position of manhood and pride, the position of determination, the position of insisting that the Arab right will not be lost or underestimated, and that the war in defense of it is extended, regardless of the sacrifices and setbacks, on the path to the inevitable and sure victory.
There were great nations outside the Arab world that gave us inestimable moral support. But the plot and we must say that with the courage of men was bigger and more powerful, and the enemy’s main focus was on the Egyptian front; on which he pushed with all his main force of armor and infantry; Reinforced by air superiority, I drew you before a picture of its dimensions, and the nature of the desert did not allow for a complete defense; Especially with hostile superiority in the air. And I realized that the development of the armed battle might not be conducive to us, and I tried with others to use all the sources of Arab power. he can perform it. Our armed forces in Sinai were forced to evacuate the first line of defense, and fought terrible battles with tanks and planes on the second line of defense.
Then we responded to the ceasefire decision, in front of assurances contained in the last Soviet draft resolution submitted to the Security Council, and in front of French statements that no one can achieve any regional expansion on the basis of the recent aggression, and in front of international public opinion especially in Asia and Africa that sees our position, And he feels the ugliness of the forces of global domination that have swept over us.
We now have several urgent tasks before us:
The first task: To remove the effects of this aggression against us, and to stand with the Arab nation in a position of firmness and steadfastness. Despite the setback, the Arab nation, with all its energies and capabilities, is able to insist on eliminating the effects of aggression.
The second task: to realize the lesson of the setback, and there are three vital facts in this regard:
1 The elimination of colonialism in the Arab world leaves Israel with its own powers, and whatever the circumstances and no matter how long the term may be, the Arab selfpowers are greater and more capable of action.
2 The reorientation of Arab interests in the service of the Arab right is a primary guarantee. The American Sixth Fleet was moving with Arab oil, and there are Arab bases that were forcibly placed despite the will of the people at the service of aggression.
3 The matter now requires a unified word that is heard by the entire Arab nation, and this is an irreplaceable guarantee in these circumstances.
We now reach an important point in this disclosure by asking ourselves: Does this mean that we do not bear responsibility for the consequences of this setback? And I tell you honestly and despite any factors on which I might base my position in the crisis I am ready to bear all the responsibility, and I have made a decision that I want all of you to help me with: I have decided to completely and finally step down from any official position and any political role, and to return to the ranks of the masses. I do my duty with her, like any other citizen.
The colonial powers imagine that Gamal Abdel Nasser is their enemy, and I want it to be clear to them that they are the entire Arab nation and not Gamal Abdel Nasser.
The forces hostile to the Arab national movement always try to portray it as an empire belonging to Abdel Nasser, and that is not true. Because the hope of Arab unity began before Gamal Abdel Nasser, and it will remain after Gamal Abdel Nasser.
And I have always told you: The nation is what remains, and that any individual, whatever his role, and whatever his contribution to the causes of his country, is a tool of the popular will, and not the maker of this popular will.
And in implementation of the text of Article 110 of the provisional constitution promulgated in March 1964, I have assigned my colleague, friend, and brother Zakaria Muhyiddin to assume the position of President of the Republic, and to act according to the constitutional provisions prescribed for that. Our people.
By this I do not describe the revolution, but the revolution is not the preserve of one generation of revolutionaries, and I am proud of the contribution of this generation of revolutionaries. He achieved the evacuation of British colonialism, achieved Egypt’s independence, defined its Arab character, fought the politics of spheres of influence in the Arab world, led the social revolution, and brought about a profound transformation in the Egyptian reality that confirmed the achievement of people’s control over the resources of their wealth and the output of national work, recovered the Suez Canal, and laid the foundations for The industrial boom in Egypt, the High Dam was built to spread fertile greenery on the barren desert, the electricity grids extended over the entire northern Nile Valley, and the oil resources exploded after a long wait. More importantly, placing the leadership of political action in the coalition of the working people’s forces; Which is the permanent source of renewed leaders who carry the flags of the national and national struggle stage after stage, adopt socialism, achieve and win.
My confidence is unlimited in this coalition that leads the national action. Peasants, workers, soldiers, intellectuals and national capitalism. Its unity and cohesion, and the creative interaction within the framework of this unit, are able to be made by work. And by hard work, by hard work as I have said more than once huge miracles in this country; To be a force for himself, for his Arab nation, for the national revolution movement, and for world peace based on justice.
The sacrifices made by our people, their ardent spirit during the period of crisis, and the glorious heroism written by the officers and soldiers of our armed forces with their blood; It will remain an unquenchable light in our history, and a great inspiration for the future and its great hopes. The people were wonderful as usual, authentic as they were, faithful, sincere and sincere.
The members of our armed forces were an honorable model for the Arab person at all times and places. They defended the grains of sand in the desert to the last drop of their blood, and were in the air despite the hostile superiority legends of sacrifice, redemption, and audacity, and the honorable rush to perform duty is the most noble thing that its performance is.
This is an hour for action, not an hour for sorrow, an attitude of ideals, not of any egoism or individual sentiment. My whole heart is with you, and I want all of your hearts to be with me, and may God be with us all; Hope in our hearts, light and guidance.
Peace be upon you and the mercy of God.
